By Soberinfo Staff WriterOriginal Source: soberinfo.comRob Lowe has played all sorts of roles in TV and the movies, but never a prophet. His prophetic powers are reserved for real life. Specifically, baseball predictions: a few weeks ago, Lowe told Houston’s Paper City magazine “I’m terrified of your Astros. I’m hoping very much not to see the Astros at Dodger Stadium.”At the time, the Dodgers had already clinched their spot in the World Series and the Astros were facing elimination. But Lowe’s fears proved well-founded, as the Astros found a way to the World Series and defeated Lowe’s beloved Dodgers in a scintillating seven-game series.Regardless of the conflict of interest posed by his baseball preferences, Lowe still took the time before the World Series to help Houston’s Council on Recovery raise over $600,000 for prevention, education, treatment, and recovery from addiction and alcoholism. It’s a subject close to Lowe’s heart; after skyrocketing to fame as part of the legendary 80s Brat Pack, he saw his life nearly derailed by addiction and excess.According to Lowe, the turning point in his life was intricately connected to Sheryl Berkoff, who would become his wife. When she explained to him “I love you…but I can’t be with you like this,” he made the decision to dedicate himself to sobriety. That was in 1990; these days, Lowe is an icon of the sober community, which led to his selection as the headliner for the Council on Recovery’s fundraiser. At the event, Lowe highlighted the parallels between personal recovery and the large-scale recovery required when a city faces massive disaster, such as Houston did with recent flooding: “Sometimes out of the darkest tragedy is a real opportunity for growth and magic to happen.”Lowe was glad to help The Council in their fundraising efforts, largely because (as he says) “Organized recovery saved my life.” However, he also knows recovery involves an individual component that can’t be forced: “The secret is, you can’t get sober for your wife. You can’t get sober for your husband…or for your job…or for the courts. You can only get sober for you.”Wise words indeed, from a man who, like Houston, has gone from top to bottom to back again.
