Substance issues among superstars in Hollywood and the music industry have been a problem for decades and are no secret. But it seems like more and more celebrities are shifting to a life of sobriety nowadays. Dozens of big-name celebrities have joined the ranks of those saying no to alcohol and drugs, opting for a clear-headed approach to life instead.

Nicki Minaj is one of the latest celebrities to come clean about her sobriety in a recent Twitter thread. She recently posted a hectic video of herself frying chicken to Twitter and a fan replied in concern, asking, “Baby are you high?”

Minaj quickly tweeted back at the fan, saying, “No I’m sober & loving life. You?” She immediately followed up with an additional tweet, adding, “I used to b [sic] happy when I was high. Now I’m happy when I’m sober. No judgment to anyone. Be gentle with yourself.”

The pair of tweets was Minaj’s first reference to a seemingly newfound sober life. She wasn’t quiet about her decades of alcohol use. Many of her songs reference substances, such as Pills N Potions. However, past interactions with fans suggest she always placed limits on her use.

While she never seems to have dealt with a serious addiction to any substances, Minaj is still turning a new leaf in terms of alcohol and other substances. She recently became a mother and has been open about the significant changes it has brought to her life.

On an episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, Minaj shared that motherhood brought a sense of tremendous calmness and serenity. She told Corden, “It doesn’t matter what is going on…when I look at my son, I’m just magically in love. He just makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me happy. He’s just so cute and cuddly.”

Her overwhelming love for her one-year-old son and his profound impact on her life likely shifted its trajectory. She doesn’t want to miss out on any experiences with him and removing alcohol and drugs makes it much easier to do that.

Despite her decision to live a sober life, Minaj isn’t one to pass judgment. She knows that perpetuating the stigma surrounding substance abuse and addiction only causes more harm.  Minaj was never shy about her substance use in the past so she likely won’t hold back about her decision to separate herself from alcohol and other drugs.

Minaj was also a vocal advocate for mental health and addiction before ever choosing to get sober herself. She took time to address these topics while accepting the Game-Changer Award in 2019 at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, saying, “It’s so important that we don’t pass judgment so that people don’t feel ashamed to speak up and ask for help.”

Minaj also believes that open conversation is crucial for combatting the growing problem. She said, “It’s so important we talk about mental health, it is, because people are dying because they don’t want to express how miserable they are and how much they are suffering, so they’d rather medicate themselves.”

“We’re all human,” she continued, “All of you in here are human. And you are allowed to be human and not beat yourself up for doing that.”

Minaj’s decision to shift toward a life of sobriety can only serve as a step in the right direction not only for herself but for her millions of fans. Watching celebrities get sober serves as a reminder that anyone can separate from drugs and alcohol, no matter who they are, what their profession is, where they live, or any other condition or circumstance.

Sobriety is for everyone and Nicki Minaj is living proof.
