When I kicked off 2019 with an unrelenting hangover, a month free of alcohol seemed like a sensible response. The festive period had been one big knees-up, and like a ruthless loan shark, my body had been keeping track of the receipts; it was finally calling in what was owed.

I hoped that a proper Dry January would hit the reset button. It would cleanse the body and replenish the mind. Most importantly, it would provoke reflection on my relationship with alcohol. (I didn’t consider myself an alcoholic, but I probably hadn’t gone one week without having a pint since turning 18.) How hard could it be?
