Drug users and relatives of people with addiction respond to a recent Times examination of overdose cases where prosecutors filed homicide charges against loved ones.

If you overdosed and died, whom do you think would be to blame?

After an in-depth examination of cases where prosecutors filed homicide charges against friends and loved ones who had a hand in acquiring the drugs, we heard from readers all over the country — including the siblings and parents of people with addiction as well as drug users themselves. They made it clear that when it comes to the opioid crisis, there are no easy answers to the question of responsibility and fault.

“All I can say,” wrote one father who lost his son, “is if you are the person who shared the drugs, and your friend dies, you will spend the rest of your life thinking of it.”
