Former Doctor Opens Up About Struggle With Opioid Addiction In New Memoir

By Adina BresgeOriginal Source: nationalpost.comCHARLOTTETOWN — He was a doctor, a father and a marathon runner who took care of himself and his patients — but beneath the white coat, Charlottetown physician Grant Matheson says his life was unravelling because of addiction.Matheson says his battle with opioid addiction almost cost him his life and put his patients at risk, but for years, he was afraid to seek treatment because he knew asking for help could jeopardize his career.“Being a physician and being sick with this, it comes with a lot of guilt,” he says. “You feel really bad that you’re in this situation, and as hard as I tried to get out of it, I thought that I was smart and because I was a doctor that I could do this myself, and it was exactly the opposite.”Matheson’s memoir, “Golden Boy,” about his descent into addiction was published in November by Acorn Press. Matheson is set to attend a book launch at the Beaconfield Carriage House in Charlottetown on Friday.The book opens with what Matheson calls his “low point” in 2005 while he was en route to receive treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Ontario after his medical license was suspended for buying drugs off a patient.
