We’re taught from a young age that drugs are bad for us; they can be dangerous and they can be addictive. And while we all know that alcohol is technically also categorised as a drug – despite the fact it’s completely legal in most countries worldwide – we tend to ignore just how unhealthy and addictive this can be, too.
But looking at raw data calculated by a group of researchers specialising in addiction – including experts from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, chemists, forensic scientists and pharmacologists – it’s clear that alcohol is definitely up there with some of the most hard-hitting drugs when it comes to its levels of addictiveness.
In the study, which dates back to 2007 but has recently been unearthed from The Lancet Journal, the experts ranked various substances according to how addictive they are. And surprise, surprise: alcohol is up there in the top five along with the likes of heroin and cocaine. As is tobacco, which is another substance frequently used in may people’s everyday lives.
