Angry outburst just ahead of new album releaseGreen Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is seeking treatment for substance abuse, the Grammy-winning rock trio announced on Sunday following the singer's angry public outburst on Friday night.
In a statement, the band apologized "to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival" in Las Vegas and clarified that its set was not cut short by Clear Channel, the host of the two-day festival.
"Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse," the statement said, adding that Green Day "regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances."
On Friday night, the 40-year-old Armstrong unleashed an angry, profanity-laden rant at the conclusion of the band's set at the iHeartRadio fest, blasting organizers for cutting short the performance when the trio was given a signal that their time was wrapping up. He then smashed his guitar before leaving the stage.
Footage of the incident was posted online shortly thereafter.
Several weeks ago, Armstrong was briefly hospitalized in Italy for an undisclosed illness, but recovered to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards and at other gigs earlier this month.
This latest incident comes just ahead of Green Day's anticipated release of a new album entitled Uno on Tuesday.
Uno, the trio's first album of new material since 2009's 21st Century Breakdown, is also the first of an ambitious forthcoming trilogy -- a follow-up album is slated for release in November and a third in January. Green Day is also slated to begin a major tour in Seattle in late November.
